Hello everyone!

My name is Jason Coombs (He/him) and I am a 3rd year Psychology student!

I moved from Powell River, which is a small town on the mainland accessible only by ferry (So we are basically on the island). Its across the water from Comox.

After struggling through high school I noticed that i had a 97% in my psychology course i took for fun and took a mental not of that.

I then spent the following 2 years post graduation doing nothing with my interest in psychology and I worked for a roofing company.

Below is my goofy ass working on a very annoying section of roof.

After I quit roofing I moved here to Victoria and started my degree at Camosun because my English grades weren’t high enough for UVIC. I attended there for a year or so then transferred here!

Been studying hard ever since. Loving the learning and the people and the new social connections I’ve made since leaving my hometown. It’s definitely difficult with student loans and budgeting as my main source of stress, however Mr. noodles has come to my rescue time and time again.

Epic budget ramen recipe: Make Mr noodles but when you add everything to the pot also add the 2 eggs plus some soy sauce and voila. Super budget friendly ramen. Add in to spices as you like! I don’t have any images but that’s ok.

Cat Break! This is Finn, he is my brothers families cat. Love that man. This is one of the movie nights on which I was chosen by him.

Ok, now to answer the question regarding social media and literacy and such things.

Connecting social media and learning seem to me to be a very tricky proposition, especially in todays age of short form content. With algorithms that push the most personalized and engaging videos ever, the chances that those videos end up being educational and thoroughly researched and well grounded are pretty low. However, should the educational content be able to take advantage of the algorithm and show it to as many people as possible, there is definitely a lot of learning that can be done/started.

Personalized Learning

Now onto personalized learning. I believe that personalized learning is fantastic. tailoring specific strategies and methods to the individual allow for an optimal learning environment. The problem is that this is often not feasible as accommodating for every would require a colossal amount of resources. Great idea, very difficult to put into practice.

Digital Identity

As to my digital identity. Digital identity is the culmination of one’s public facing information, this includes digital profiles, like facebook and instagram. Currently I try as much as I can to go under the radar. I don’t care much for advertising myself to an internet audience. I much prefer the depth and enrichment that I receive from in-person interactions. My digital footprint is mostly the method of which i use to network people to arrange for in person activities such as movie nights or game nights or study times. I use social media to enrich my social life.

Ethics

Finally onto ethics (Morality). This is an extremely complicated topic as we as consumers are so far disconnected from the means of production that I truly don’t believe that there is ethical consumption under our current state of government and political stuff (Capitalism). As such, different people draw different lines on where they believe in the ethical use of digital media and online tools/resources. Personally I believe in the Rogerian principle of unconditional positive regard and I apply that as much as I can in my digital social interactions.

When it comes to AI I try to avoid it as much as possible as it is built off the backs of stolen material by artists and other platforms where the people posting had no say in the utilization of their artwork to train a random AI model. I don’t believe the is ethical AI art generation yet. The video above discusses how AI uses images without consent from the artist, and how artists can pre-emptively protect their art with the use of filters that confuse AI.

That’s it for my fist blog post! Thanks for reading

Appreciate ya
